E-mail and DNS oddities

Ok, this sort of stuff I just noticed.

I've been able in the past to receive mail @guavaween.org (virt host on my
server). Now, I can't ping it from off my server. A whois lists the
correct nameservers associated with guavaween.org. So what gives?

if the DNS works on the namesever - I can ping www.guavaween.org from the
DNS server and whois lists the correct nameserver for the domain
ns1.bish.net why won't DNS work outside of the DNS server? I can't ping
and mail is so broken right now because the MX records can't be looked up.
