Don't quit just yet.  Can you cut and paste the output from /sbin/route to
an email or re-typing it.  It sounds like your default route isn't being
setup at boot time.  Are you going to use this for a dialup or is this
machine going to be on a lan?  Also, have you tried running netcfg in
X?  Nice little gui that allows you to set everything up from there.
