I took the easy way out... put back in the 3c509 card and reconfigured the network so that the two segments 10 and 100 were bridged togethe.... :-)

Dunno if it'll help any, but you might try compiling the driver as a
module so you can play around with it a bit without rebooting.

You might also want to make sure you are using the latest driver.
Check http://www.beowulf.org/linux/drivers/ to see what the latest
version is (assuming it comes from Don Becker like most of the other
network card drivers).
