Well, Window Maker is the fastest WM I have ever used, and very 
stable.  Be sure you get the very latest release, and if you have 
any problems the best place to go is #WindowMaker on efnet even 
Alfredo (the lead programmer) stops in from time to time.  But if 
you don't like the NEXTSTEP look, try blackbox.  I haven't used it 
myself but I have heard good things about it.
