Depends.  For a bourne-like shell (sh, ksh, bash), do
"DISPLAY=other.machine:0 ; export DISPLAY", then run whatever.  Now if
their desktop thingy includes a window manager, you'll probably have
some interesting difficulties...  One way around that is to run the
desktop thingy from your .xinitrc (or .xsession or whatever), or set
it to run from, say, fvwm's "Exit fvwm and start ..."-type menus.
