Could be the old drive failing.  Could be the kernel doesn't like the
USB controller or something.

If I could see the drives, I could tell you for sure.  (We have a
drive tester here, plus I do a lot of this kind of thing...)

BTW, if anyone cares, we offer a drive upgrade service in the store.
For $50, we'll install the new drive, clone the old one to the new
one, and resize/move partitions as necessary to fit the new drive.

I also have some data recovery tricks if the old hard drive is
failing...
