Thank you for replying, Bonnie.  

I am prejudiced against RealPlayer as it had too big of a footprint,
loaded spyware, and was always bugging me to update to a pay service
when I used Windows as my main OS.  Things are exactly reversed now.  I
only boot Win in a pinch to see a vidclip I'm interested in and for
games. And I never use RP in any OS.

If I can get this mplayer thing worked out the only thing I'll miss is
Ultima Online and a few games.  I can deal with that.

Thanks again.  I know my problem with RP is just MY problem.  I'm not
seeking a flame fest or converts.
