It all depends on how your network is setup.  I've used SBC,  
Valuenet, and Charter (cable) with the following setup:

{Internet} --[phone/cable line]-- {DSL/Cable Modem} -- {router+FW/NAT/ 
DHCP} -- {switch} -- {many machines}

You can get routers that handle the PPPoE connection, if that's how  
your ISPs is setup.  Also, you can now get "modems" that include the  
router and switch and even wireless.

How do you currently have your network setup?
