If this is a certain motherboard that I'm very familiar with, it
probably needs a BIOS update.  ISTR the BIOS it is running is from
3/2004.

BTW, on a similar note, I have a Samsung DVD burner that I strongly
suspects needs a firmware update...  Bad things happen when I use
cdrecord on it (bad burns, total lock-ups, that sort of thing).  Oddly
though, growisofs works perfectly.
