GNOME depends on name resolution.
It's a major disadvantage of GNOME's network-centric model.

You have a couple of options to localize resolution regardless of 
connectivity:
1)  Put static entries in /etc/hosts
2)  Run name services cache daemon (nscd)
3)  Run a caching-only DNS server

I like #2 because it addresses NIS or LDAP provided names as well.
Of course, only #1 will address start-up time issues.

BTW, in your other post, it sounds like you are booting DHCP, but your 
leases don't expire for a week or so.
Check /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0.
