First off, you don't have to change distros.
You do *not* need to use the new Sarge installer to install Sarge.
You can boot a bare system and then dselect your way through an install.

Secondly, check for an "expert" or other mode to the installer.
People complain about or believe there are limitations to the Fedora 
Anaconda installer *until* they pass "expert" at the installer boot 
prompt (as well as "askmethod" or other options)..
Then you get all sorts of options, including partitioning, 3-level 
package selection, etc...
Plus you always have Ctrl-Alt-F2 to a prompt (which I always use to 
address kernel 2.6 geometry issues).
