You can check this by examining the wire colors on the connectors.  There's a nice PDF detailing these colors here:

  Check pages 9 and 10 for what I'm talking about.  You'll need to buy a hub or switch if your cable is not a crossover cable.  You can get a used 10MB hub VERY cheaply, I wouldn't give more than a dollar for one.  Also, Steve and Kara sell nice desktop switches very affordably...
