What's strange is that artsd is off once I'm in the KDE.  By off I mean 
there is no artsd processes (ps fauxww | grep -i artsd) and I have to 
turn it on from with the System Control Menu before I can test the 
sound.

I'm not quite clear on how to do this.  GM never even gets far enough 
to do any configuration.

That's easy enough to do.  I'll give this a whirl later this evening.

I am using KDE (the default with Knoppix), so your assumptions are 
right on.
