Changed from Knoppix 3.4 to 3.6 and changed from Proxim to Netgear
PCMCIA card.

To configure the wireless card:
  "Knoppix" -> "Network/Internet" -> "Wavelan configuration"
  entered the encryption key by hand

To enable the wifi interface:
  $ sudo ifconfig eth0 down # the wired interface; wireless is on eth1
  "Knoppix" -> "Network/Internet" -> "Network card configuration"

Works like a charm.
