It's actually pretty easy to build and install from source. For the most 
common Linux distros, "make install" will even parse your rc halt script 
and insert the stuff needed to recognize a power failure shutdown.

Another alternative is nut, Network UPS Tools. I've just looked at it, not 
used it. More info is available here:
