Jason,

I just edited the file in my ~/.metacity/sessions with the geometry
stanza,  changed the height="24" entry to height="43", and rebooted. When
my system came up, the Gnome-terminal on my desktop is 80x43 rather than
80x24 it had been before. This is evidently one way you can pre-set your
desktop the way you like it. Of course, you can always check the "Save
current setup" box on your shutdown screen to do the same thing (at least
it's supposed to).
