Re: Bonnie's new computer

I can tell you that an AthlonXP 1600+, 512mb CAS2 DDR RAM , Abit KT-266
(something like that) Mboard, 7200 rpm ATA 100 drives, Tulip chip ethernet
card, Yamaha CD burner, Enlight case, and an Nvidia Ti-4200 video board
has yet be slow (under Linux) or give trouble in the 1.5 years that I've
had it. I think I have around $1200 in it in all (1.5 year ago prices).

The "heaviest" thing I do with it is play unreal tournament and other
such games and it can maintain 50 - 70 frames per second in linux, around
40 fps in Winders (appears to be regulated). That's with most of the
settings maxed out.

So anyhoo, whatever's halfway current now should rock for relatively
cheap. I think the places to pay up are the video card and
the case (a nice case is worth an extra $20 or so). Perhaps the RAM and
burner too.

A good place to find what gives the best bang for the buck is
www.tomshardware.com

Hope that helps.

Mike
