Yes, when you install open office it creates KDE menu entries.  As a
suggestion I added the entire OO submenu as an icon on the panel.

Yes, evolution is a royal pain in the arse.  I resorted to the approach
of downloading the entire Ximian Gnome Set (including evolution).  I did
this for two reason.  One, it made the Evolution install a piece of
cake.  And two I own a Palm and I wanted to be able to sync it to
Evolution.  Unfortunately the Kpilot does not have evolution conduits. 
But GnomePilot does.  So, whenever I want to sync I log in under gnome. 
Yes it is a pain in the arse, but the alternative is to not having sync
capabilities.
