Re: Announcing a beta release of Red Hat Linux: Skipjack (fwd)

arg

im about convinced that the installer is alpha level quality :\

ive done 4 installs on 2 different machines. if i select that i want to
pick the packages myself after picking a workstation install, at some point
during the file copy the installer terminates abnormally and im presented
with a message that i can now safely reboot my computer. if i just let it
go through and pick its own packages then it installs ok (well seemingly).

i have to admit that install 2 on machine 1 went great.

install 1 on machine 2 did the abnormal termination again during file copy
(i tried to select packages myself again)

install 2 on machine 2 seemingly went ok, but upon reboot im presented with
a gui login that isnt kde (i picked kde during the install). i log in but
it looks like im in some ultra basic window manager (As im only presented
with a terminal window, and nothing else)

i run startkde (or is it kdestart), and it runs through the kde gui wizard,
but the entire time im seeing permission denied errors appearing in the
terminal window and some error about /var/something not being owned by root.
it did this for both my regular username login and root.

im going to reinstall tonight and see what happens (and force full format
with bad block check). i formatted all partitions ext3. i set up a /boot,
swap, /var, and / partitions.

machine 1:
matrox g400 max
athlon 700
amd 751 northbridge
amd 756 southbridge
isa sb16 pnp
realtek 8139

machine2:
ati radeon 64 DDR vivo
2x athlon mp 1.2ghz
amd 762 northbridge
amd 768 southbridge (i think 768 anyway)
3com 3x905 b or c
sblive

nothing exceptionally out of the ordinary for either machine, at least not
that i can think of. all the hardware should be well supported AFAIK

anyone heard of installation problems like this for this release?
