Bad idea.  Install the updates kernel.

If you are really concerned about stability, switch to 2.2.20.  2.4.x
kernels have problems under heavy VM load, although the Red Hat errata
kernel should survive most loads.  The other option would be the
latest 2.4.x kernel with Rik van Riel's rmap patch or the latest -aa
patch.
