Does it log the connections to it?

Do you have hosts named in /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny? (as
opposed to ip addresses).

well that's a good point, I hadn't thought about the dns
I wonder if it's trying to resolution, and why, I can see
smtp resolving for the spam protection but pop3, thanks I
appreciate the insight
