I also have been using PHP, beginning perhap 8 months ago. I agree with
Steve that it is less generally applicable, but if the main goal is to
develop web applications, then the apache-php-mysql triad is mighty good.
A single-use language is not too bad if the particular use is an important
one. Also, I find other people's php code pretty easy to understand, so
reusing snippets I find out at the script sites is also efficient.

I've also made a little use of php as a standalone scripting language when
I had to deal with some search-and-replace needs. I don't advise depending
on this because php is not really designed for it.
